youth sports

The Youth Bureau’s staff plan and implement low-cost recreation programs and activities designed to be especially interesting and challenging to those under 18 years.

It is our mission to teach the basic skills which young people need to play sports in a safe, enjoyable and nurturing environment, where all children get an equal chance to play regardless of skill level.

Staff manages youth sports programs to promote fair and safe play through organized sports activities. In Youth Sports the intention is to instruct basic skills for ages 3 – 12 and provide leagues and places to play competitively for ages 11 -17. Our sports focus on recreation, physical development, socialization, fun and sportsmanship, basic skill development, plus respect for teammates, coaches, parent, officials and spectators.

The staff’s training through the National Alliance for Youth Sports (NAYS) www.nays.org is the key for making informed choices and setting high standards for youth sports. All coaches MUST be certified and sign a Code of Ethics form. The Youth Sports Coordinator is a NAYS Certified Administrator. Our staff can certify coaches in most sports.

If your organization needs assistance contact, Jim Thornton, Youth Sports Coordinator at 864-467-8011. Volunteer coaches and officials are well trained in their roles and responsibilities and provide children a safe, enjoyable recreation opportunity. The Youth Program Bureau provides opportunities for high-school and college youth to participate as coaches, instructors, score keepers, supervisors and other service learning activities.
